7 Best Music Festivals Around the World

If you love and appreciate music like I do, you know that one of the best ways to experience music is at a festival. They are a terrific way to get together with people of various nationalities who are as passionate about music as you are. Attending any of these festivals will make you realize that music is a unifying force, something that we all have in common despite our differences.

There are many wonderful music festivals around the world. Here is my compilation of the seven best festivals to attend if you love music and travel.

1. Tomorrowland—Boom, Belgium

With the popularity of electronic dance music growing across the globe, this music festival, dedicated solely to this musical genre, gets bigger and bigger each year. I've been to three of them so far and it truly gets more popular every year.

2. Lollapalooza—Touring

The beauty of Lollapalooza is that it is a touring music festival. When it was first conceived, the idea was for the festival to tour North America. Now the festival travels to several cities in North and South America as well as Europe. Lollapalooza features a diverse range of alternative rock, indie rock, hip hop, heavy metal, and electronic music acts.

3. Sziget—Budapest, Hungary

This is one of Europe’s largest music festivals, with more than 1,000 acts from various genres congregating on a small island on the Danube. It is a two-time winner in the Best European Festivals for Best Line-up and Best Major Festival categories. Just look how awesome it was this year!

4. Mawazine—Rabat, Morocco

This world-renowned festival is the only one on our list located on the African continent. This special music festival is also called by another name, Rhythms of the World. Big acts from America, Europe, Australia, Asia, and the Middle East all congregate in this truly global festival.

5. Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival—Indio, California

With a line-up consisting of both established and up-and-coming talents on eight stages, Coachella has become one of the largest festivals in the world. It is held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, right in the middle of California's Colorado Desert. It is usually held over consecutive 3-day weekends.

6. Panorama—New York

Though relatively new to the festival scene, Panorama is a chance for music lovers to enjoy their favourite acts if they missed the bigger and more popular Coachella festival. Produced by the same people behind Coachella, it promises the same quality acts at a much smaller venue (Randall's Island Park, New York).

7. Glastonbury Festival—Somerset, England

A recipient of the Best European Festivals’ Best Festival Line-up category, Glastonbury is a much-awaited major event in Great Britain. Expect contemporary musical acts along with dance, comedy, theatre, and other artists participating in this annual event, usually held during the last weekend of June.

A Word of Caution

As great as these music festivals are, I must say from my very own experience they are also great opportunities for unscrupulous individuals looking to lift cash or valuables from unsuspecting (and often, not that sober) attendees. The huge crowds can also be confusing, and it's easy to misplace personal belongings.

Make sure that your valuables are well-protected by taking out travel insurance. I know it may sound silly, but it has proven useful for me. I remember booking a great holiday and arranging everything right before my plans changed due to a family issue. Guess what, I read the terms of my travel insurance and found they covered the trip cancellation as well as any valuables that get lost or stolen on a trip. Don’t skip over it, especially when you’re traveling abroad to attend one of these festivals.
